Turmeric not only has a fantastic aroma and a beautiful light yellow to orange colour, but is also one of the healthiest foods. The small root plant has gained enormous importance in recent years as a spice in powder form and has become indispensable in European households. Whether for curries or a golden milk - this all-rounder is available as a tuber or powder.
From August to April we purchase the tubers from our sister company Asica Peru Farms, which is a sustainable production. Turmeric is a perennial, herbaceous plant that grows to a height of about one metre and forms tubers underground. During harvesting, the tubers are dug up and processed directly on site. After drying under the sun for ten days, they are ground into powder or packed in one piece and delivered directly to their destination in Europe.
The fresh root develops a resinous, slightly burning taste. When dried, it tastes mildly spicy and slightly earthy-bitter. Curcuma keeps fresh for a long time if stored correctly. Turmeric is usually peeled before processing. It is essential to wear gloves here, as the curcumin in the root strongly discolours.
In the refrigerator the turmeric stays fresh for several weeks. A dry and dark storage place is important.
